Popular actress, Onyeka Onwenu released a statement following her sack as Director General, DG, of the National Center For Women Development.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday sacked heads of over 23 federal government Parastatals, Agencies and Commissions, among whom was Onwenu.
But some of the statements from her release have put her under fire. According to her:
“When the call came on September 13, 2013 to serve Nigeria as DG, National Center For Women Development, I took it as a call from God and I answered in the affirmative.
I served for 2 years and 5 months and did my best under very difficult conditions. We hardly had money to operate and the place was badly run down.
My administration changed all that. There remained though, a remnant who felt that the Center was their personal preserve and that the position of Director General should only go to someone from their part of the country.
When that did not work, I was targeted and abused for being an Igbo woman who came to give jobs to and elevate my people while sidelining them.”
Here are some reactions to her statement from Twitter
Our friend Emeka Mba was removed from the NBC. He is Igbo. He has not said ‘pin’. Far more decent, gracious and dignified than Onyeka Onwenu

The question I have to ask is this – was Onyeka Onwenu the only Igbo MDA head that was sacked?

Onyeka Onwenu singing the tribal song again. Instead of bowing out gracefully. Didnt she see pictures of Prof. Rafindadi leaving Uni Lokoja?

Onyeka Onwenu refused to resign or complain when she noticed all her claims. Talking about it when sacked has another new meaning on its own

According to this statement, Onyeka Onwenu claims “mostly norhterners” ganged up against her because she is Igbo https://t.co/5zkn6JUJom

As much as I dislike Buhari, for Onyeka Onwenu to say she was sacked bcos she is Igbo is pure nonsense. What of the other 24 DGs sacked?

But she has some supporters too
Onyeka Onwenu may’ve been sacked but I saw some points needing SOS in her article. Tribalism is all-round & is killing this nation. Eziokwu

With due respect, d likes of Onyeka Onwenu deserves better treatment 4rm d ministry. Tribalism, nepotism & favoritism shouldn’t be the norm

In a country where an oba threatened to drown a whole tribe, what onyeka onwenu was made to under go should not suprise anybody.
