A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress and close associate of Buhari, Lawal Jafaru Isa, has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Jafaru who was a military governor during the Abacha regime, was arrested at about 9pm at his Asokoro residence in Abuja onJanuary 6th. He is alleged to have received N100 million from the office of embattled former NSA Sambo Dasuki.
EFCC had written to him requesting that he comes forward to explain the reason for receiving the money. Jafaru then wrote to the antigraft agency, asking that his invitation be postponed because he lost a relative. Dissatisfied with his request, EFCC operatives went to his house yesterday night and arrested him.
According to a report on an online medium, an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari revealed that although Isa was a close political ally to president Buhari, he would nonetheless remain neutral in the matter, in line with his promise of zero tolerance to corruption.
The aide however stated that the long relationship which existed between the embattled politician and the president “does not in any way suggest that Buhari was associated with the alleged collection of N100 million from the ONSA.”
