In 1993, Sarki’s father, Ibrahim Coomassie was appointed Inspector General of the Nigerian Police by the late General Sani Abacha. Under his tenure as IG of Police, in June 1994, president-elect Moshood Abiola was arrested without warrant and detained by the police.
He was mistreated in prison, where he was held for four years before dying in June 1998. Although head of police, Coomassie evaded responsibility for Abiola’s detention.
The Abacha regime is remembered as the most corrupt in the history of Nigeria and billions of dollars were looted from Nigeria’s treasury by Abacha and his henchmen.
Coomasie was among those tipped to become National Security Adviser but according to media reports, he was dropped due to controversies surrounding his age. He serves as the Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF).
