Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa is the only Nigerian leader to have ever appeared on the cover of influential magazine, TIME.
He was a vastly learned Nigerian politician, and the only prime minister Nigeria ever had.
In January 1960, he was knighted by Elizabeth II as a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, one of the highest recognitions at the time.
He studied abroad for a year at the University of London’s Institute of Education, which is currently part of University College, London.
Erudite scholar Balewa also founded the Northern People’s Congress (NPC). He championed the rights of the Northerners and was one of those whose nationalistic drive played a huge role in Nigeria’s independence.
